Wild Wanders

Professor: Micah Rutenberg Fall 2024

Upon arriving in Tokyo for my semester abroad, one of the first things I noticed was the street trees. For such a large urban city, its street trees were big and plentiful. Over time, I came to understand that, while there is vegetation in Tokyo, there is not nature. All of the greenery is manicured and managed to the point where it has none of the wildness true nature needs. My interest was piqued with the contrast between the wild and the manufactured and how they can play each other’s parts. The Takashimaya mall served as a perfectly manufactured place to insert a bit of wild and let it take over.
