Dragon Fruit Study
Professor: Erin Collins Fall 2021
My very first project in architecture school.
This was a practice in form finding. It started with a close examination of a specific fruit. We then pulled regulating lines from it to inform the following steps. Our next two steps were a practice in using those regulating lines to create a form at different scales.
Regulating Lines
Formalized lines were extracted from the informal ones of the fruit. Lines were continued past the point of contact and shapes were closed to form intersections.
Foam Form
I distilled the lines down to form compelling closed shapes. The layering of the foam core allowed for each shape to be extruded a different amount.
Lamp
The lamp was more abstractly related to the regulating lines. Straight lines running through the center of the fruit turned into the structure of the lamp. The many overlapping circles turned into the actual shade.
